Steep Skiing Guru Andrew Mclean: Episode 38

Posted on November 09 2017

Double Whippets, Gear Design and of Course Steep Skiing

We recorded this episode with Andrew back in the summer but it was so good we had to wait until you were paying attention. This was truly one of our favorite interviews and you will have to be the judge if we did a better job than Stephen Cobert did back in 2007 after the release of the movie Steep!

Stolen from his profile on Scarpa, this picture of Andrew getting steep features his invention one of my favorite tools, the whippet. It makes me feel way better about my liberal use of it when I hear he is often skiing around the Watsatch backcountry with one in each hand. This is from a different age in gear design and development when it was the athletes themselves that drove the demand, design, and end user.

Steep skiing as promised

Steep skiing is truly a skill I admire and strive for. I have long awaited someone revealing the tricks of the trade and Backcountry Magazine and OR put Andrew up to breaking it down. Unfortunately after hearing in the intro that it is mainly mental I realized I would have to take a hard pass!
A special shoutout to Outdoor Retailer who put us up in this fine hotel room after we complained about how terrible the Motel 8 was last year in episode 26!
