12/13, 1/10 + 2/7: Aspen Town Series Races

Posted on December 11 2016

Snowmass Burnt Mountain Power of Four Lead Pack

The lead pack at the 2014 Aspen Snowmass Audi Power of Four Skimo Race.

The Skimo season has officially begun! The early COSMIC races have all been a huge success and racers are busting through the cobwebs with a vengeance. If you are thinking about getting into randonée racing or looking to spice up your training days, register for the Aspen Town Series. There will be three events: December 13th on Aspen Mountain, January 10th on Highlands, and February 7th on Highlands.

In the past, these events have been held Tuesday nights at Highlands. Now, to accommodate “work” days and late nights, all Town Series races will be FREE and held at 7 am. These races are designed for racers of all levels and are a great way to connect with the local racing community. Every race will offer two courses - recreational and competitive. The competitive course will always include a mandatory (and sometimes rowdy) bootpack. The course design will vary from a single-loop to a test of how many laps you can complete in an allotted time frame. Rule #2: all racers must wear a helmet.* The race courses have been designed to be simpler and more straightforward than in previous years. Did we mention that all participants get free coffee and donuts!? The most exciting part is that when you register for all three Town Series races, you get a discount on your Power of Four registration!

If you are looking for a backcountry partner, you should start your search here. At its core, ski mountaineering transcends spandex and skinny skis and is really just a cardio fix until we can get deeper into the mountains. Rando racing prepares you to go farther faster! Maybe you’ll even find your next beacon buddy at the race! [Check out our other Avalanche Awareness events, too! #readytomingle].

For these races, the fun factor increases as your set-up weight decreases. If you are looking to try a lighter boot or ski, come by our Carbondale location or send us an email with your boot size to info@cripplecreekbc.com. If you are registered for the Town Series, you will receive 50% off Cripple Creek rentals for the races. In Aspen? No problem! We will deliver them to you on race day.

These races will prepare you to take on any other race this season - Power of Four, anyone? At the very least, this is a great opportunity to get your skinning legs underneath you so you can charge into the spring backcountry season. The best part of the whole series is that Cripple Creek Backcountry will be setting the course, so you know it is going to be a good time!

The first race will be held December 13th at the base of Gondola on Aspen Mountain. The next event is January 10th at Highlands. The third event of the series will take place February 7th, also at Highlands. If you enjoyed the series, we definitely recommend that you take on the Power of Four - the raddest and baddest race in the Lower 48.

Just to recap, if you register for the three FREE Aspen Town Series races, you will receive:

  • A discounted entry to the Power of Four Skimo Race
  • Free coffee and donuts
  • 50% off Cripple Creek Rentals and free delivery for race day
  • The opportunity to shamelessly wear spandex

We'll see you there! If you have any questions, give us a shout at the store or look for our Facebook event pages.

*Rule #1: There are no rules.
