Description

Whether freeride or extended tour is your game, the Yak does it all. Plum updated their Yak 12 to give it a little extra boost into the big mountain game. Now jumping from 12 to 14 on the DIN scale the Yak 14 will keep you locked and loaded for those big deep lines you have been drooling over all year.

With a 7075 aluminum construction that will hold up over long periods of time, and with less moving parts as compared to other companies, the Yak will give durability a whole new name. The Yak is designed to support ski's at 95mm under foot and wider, it is not advised to use this binding under those perimeters. This will allow for the Yak to have a wider platform, creating a much more stable base for when cranking out deep turns.

The Yak also allows for 3 different climbing heights, from flat, to 59mm, all the way to 89mm, even the steepest approach doesn't stand a chance. The Yak gives you the ability to switch between all three with a flick of your pole. the optional brakes can be added in a 110mm or 130mm size and gives you a little extra security in those steep and deep scenarios.

So when you want to take out those monsters for a day of powder slaying and powder playing, look into the Yak for a supported and durable beefy binding, but without the weight of a beef cake binding.

Plum Yak 14: Simple, solid, reliable and elegant

This has been a great everyday touring binding on a pair of Black Crows Corvus Freebird skis. The design of the heel tower is simple, solid, reliable and elegant. These bindings take a beating and release appropriately when needed. While the brake system takes some getting used to, it has worked well and isn't as prone to failure as some other brake systems. If the brake system were slightly easier to engage, my rating would be five stars. That being said, if you take skis off at transitions, this won't impact your day much. It's only annoying if you are trying to do skis-on transitions after climbs. (Apparently, the difference between four and five stars is a few seconds.)

One thing to keep in mind: the front/back adjustment for the heel is useful if you use multiple boots, but be sure to secure adequately (tighten, use Loctite, etc.) or you might find yourself at the top of a line unable to click in. A star drive bit is an important part of your repair kit with these bindings.
