Description

New for 2022, the Dynafit ST Rotation 14 is the alpine touring “tech” binding for the hard charging skiers out there who are not certain if they actually trust an alpine touring tech-style binding. We get it. It can be difficult to reconcile the power, durability and performance this binding brings when looking down at the minimal pins-in-boots system. Trust it. This is the strongest, burliest, big boot driving, hard-charging binding that Dynafit produces.

The first tech-binding with a full TUV safety certification, the ST Rotation features a unique lateral swivel mechanism which enables safer releaseability. This swivel also allows for slight dynamic boot movement while skiing to eliminate “pre-releasing” that can be common in tech-style bindings when railing turns on bigger skis and firmer snow. Also unique to this binding is its alpine-style rear travel mechanism: The heel unit sits snugly against your boot when the ski is flat, then moves fore and aft as the ski flexes underfoot. This once again allows for more aggressive skiing on big skis or firm snow without any unintended pre-release.

The durable forged aluminum heel unit is integrated directly into the plastic housing, incorporating the easiest to use three-position lifter system on the market. Weighing 605 grams, the ST Rotation 14 has a DIN adjustment from 7-14 for those that like to turn it up past “11”!  This is the ski anything, anywhere binding that will perform in-bounds and out. Trust it!

Safety vs. minor annoyances

I like the bindings in general (reviewing the 2020 version) but they do have issues. Getting into them can be a PIA. Annoying is one thing, but at a difficult transition is can be down right dangerous. I improved the situation by shaving very small amounts of plastic/sole from my boot tips. Once in the other problem with my version is the brake noise. The nice and safe heal release plate makes an annoying rattle in most conditions. If you are a person that hates rattles - and I do - this is an issue.
