Description

The Alien 1.0 is back and we really do mean better than ever. The boot is now lighter, better skiing and best of all a little bit more affordable. It still combines the best of all worlds with a carbon cuff to drop weight and stay stiff, but with a lower that is warmer, moldable and more durable than its carbon brethren. This boot is truly made for for the podium, but also day in and day out abuse on the longest missions you can dream up.

I remember the first time I picked up a pair and thought to myself "this can't be possible." If there is a way to achieve "beyond possible" this is the boot. It weighs in at a mere 700 grams and is also the first race boot to feature the popular Boa Closure System. The benefits of which are it is super light, user friendly, and allows for "like a glove" fit for outstanding performance. This boot has a carbon fiber upper cuff and a lower boot construction unlike the competition consisting of a polyamide exterior with a carbon-fiber internal core and an all-carbon construction, all of which provides a rigid, but versatile performance, with significant weight savings. The Alien 1.0 utilizes a "A-light" quick release walk/ ski mode lever that is both precise, utilitarian, ultra light, and fast, fast, fast to transition between walking or skiing.

Scarpa 1.1: 1.0, but 0.1 more

If you were a fan of the old Alien 1.0, the new “1.1” maintains the race performance while upgrading the boot as a (very) lightweight tourer for big missions.

Updates: The 1.0 was a model of simplicity, and that was beautiful. Still, it wasn’t great when your feet were soaked at the start of a tour unless you wore a race suit or you had to crank the closure mechanism to the point of breaking the cord. On the 1.1, the gator provides some protection from snow and the redesigned closure (still based on the same vertical system) is easy to use. It takes one sitting to tension this correctly and otherwise figure out the gator and closure, but that’s it.

Fit: The 1.1 boot has a slightly more narrow fit than the 1.0 boot, but that is marginal. After moulding, this boot has been extremely comfortable in races and on long tours. The new liner is an upgrade for the fit, as well.

Ski performance: Like the 1.0, the 1.1 boots ski really well, even with larger skis in non-race situations. While I would not recommend this to drive a heavy ski with a 110mm waist, these do drive larger (e.g., 95mm waist) skis designed for ski mountaineering or light touring. There are minor “in the box” modifications that come standard, such as a forward lean adjustment and additional cuff reinforcement.

Look: I loved the neon yellow/green, but have to admit the black is pretty slick. These go well with a race suit, standard ski pants, jeans, shorts or whatever you are wearing to the club (with your ice axe and harness).

The New Scarpa Alien 1.0

Worth the wait. Great boot as good or better than the carbon Alien 1.0. Base length is the same, which means I didn't need to remount or buy new skis. Light, stiff, yet good articulation. Minimal break in time for liner. Short learning curve to the gator, boa and the upper boot tension.

Thank you Cripple Creek for the prompt, professional service!
